It is with profound sadness that St Helena Government announces the passing of Jonathan, the world’s oldest known land animal and one of St Helena’s most treasured and beloved residents.
Jonathan passed away peacefully at his home in the grounds of Plantation House, where he had lived for more than 140 years.
Believed to have been born around 1832, Jonathan arrived on St Helena in 1882 as a fully mature adult. Over the decades that followed, he became an enduring part of life on the Island, witnessing extraordinary changes both on St Helena and across the wider world.
Generations of Saints have grown up knowing Jonathan. For many, he was far more than a record-breaking tortoise. He was a familiar and reassuring presence at Plantation House and became deeply woven into the history, identity and collective memory of the Island.
His remarkable longevity also captured the imagination of people around the world. Visitors travelled thousands of miles for the opportunity to see him, while photographs and stories of his life introduced St Helena to millions of people who may otherwise never have heard of our small Island in the South Atlantic.
In 2026, Jonathan received further international recognition when he was named a Guinness World Records ICON, acknowledging not only his extraordinary age but the affection and fascination he inspired across the globe.
Throughout his later years, Jonathan was cared for with great dedication by the Plantation House team and the St Helena Veterinary Service. St Helena Government extends its sincere thanks to everyone who contributed to his care and wellbeing over the years.
His loss will be felt deeply across our community.
Jonathan lived through the reigns of eight British monarchs and saw more than 30 Governors serve on St Helena during his lifetime. Yet perhaps his greatest legacy is much simpler: for generations, he brought joy to those who encountered him and became an unmistakable symbol of the resilience and unique character of St Helena.
Flags on St Helena will be flown at half-mast as a mark of respect, and details of arrangements to commemorate Jonathan's extraordinary life will be announced in due course.
St Helena Government joins the people of St Helena and Jonathan's many admirers around the world in mourning his passing and celebrating an extraordinary life.
Farewell, Jonathan.
